What Is a Lensometer?

lensometer (also known as a focimeter or vertometer) is a fundamental device used in optometry and ophthalmology to verify eyeglass prescriptions, determine the power of contact lenses, and ensure lens accuracy. Whether you’re a student, practitioner, or eye-care enthusiast, mastering this tool is essential in clinical practice.

The lensometer is used to measure:

  • Sphere power (SPH)
  • Cylinder power (CYL) and axis (for astigmatism)
  • Unknown Power ,Cyl,Prism
  • Add power (for bifocals/progressives)
  • Prism (if present)
  • Optical center alignment

🧪 Step-by-Step: How to Use a Manual Lensometer-

🔹 Step 1: Calibration

Ensure the eyepiece is focused for your eye. Turn the eyepiece until the reticle (target pattern) becomes clear and sharp.

🔹 Step 2: Place the Glasses

Position the eyeglass lens (usually the right lens first) against the lens stop. Center the lens so that the lensometer target is clear.

🔹 Step 3: Focus the Reticle

Adjust the power wheel until the lensometer’s reticle becomes sharply focused:

  • The sphere lines will focus first if the lens is spherical.
  • If astigmatism is present, adjust for cylinder and axis using the axis wheel.

🔹 Step 4: Read the Measurement

  • Note the sphere power
  • Adjust for cylinder power (if needed)
  • Determine the axis from the protractor scale
  • Check for prism displacement from the center
  • Use the add power dial if it’s a multifocal lens

🔹 Step 5: Repeat for the Left Lens

Follow the same steps for the left lens.
